Vanguard School - Lake Wales, FL

I Description of property

This facility has several structures of different construction design, size and height.

II Description of problem
Originally this facility had it's own maintenance staff attempt to do the exclusion, but quickly realized an expert was needed and called Friends of Bats.
The bats were thought to be in one area of one of the smaller structures, but after a close inspection it was found that the bats had been in two of the educational buildings, the center fountain pavilion and in the dorm room flashings.

This photo is the interior of Fountain Pavilion. Bats were roosting under the planks and beams.

III Method used

Because there were several different types of structures on the campus, we had to utilize several different methods to accommodate the needs of each.

Several structures required net flap devices, the two large dorm buildings and the gymnasium structure required boxing in the roof AC vent areas and installing escape flaps to allow the bats safe exit. The fountain gazebo required netting the entire structure to prevent bats from reentering. The inner column had to be custom wrapped to allow the bats to exit and prevent them from reentering. The lower school and IPAC structure required three different custom made net flap devices and one way valves to allow the bats safe exit and prevent reentrance.

The most difficult area was in the 3 story dorm buildings where the soffit vent screens had deteriorated . Replacement inserts were no longer available. We had to make custom inserts using recessed light fixtures with special exclusion escape tubes hanging from them. Once the bats were gone the tubes were removed and the fixtures were then custom fitted with wire screening. Access was gained using a 50 foot boom lift.
