St. Leo's Church - Bonita Springs, FL

I Description of property

A very large multilevel facility with 2 towers, a glass dome in the center, and numerous peaks, valleys and ridge, made this a challenging project. It is located in beautiful Bonita Springs, on the southwest coast of Florida.

II Description of problem

St. Leo's Church had some areas where small pockets of bats were roosting, but the main tower at the rear of the facility was packed with a colony of approximately 4,000 bats living in the void.

III Method used

Access to the tower was gained with an 85 foot boom lift.

IV Unique attributes of project

One of the difficult parts of this project was that the tower was over 90 feet high. Another problem was that an extremely large colony of Hornets was also living in the roof void. We could not spray any pesticides to kill the hornets because the risk of poisoning the bats was too great. So it was decided to try to cover as much of our bodies as possible with thick clothing while working on the tower. The problem with that was that it was about 85 degrees and sunny.

V Project duration

After (a hot and sweaty) 7 hours the entire tower was covered with a continuous exclusion net to allow the bats to safely exit but not return. The remainder of the facility took three days to complete and we did it without being stung once.
