I Description of property
This multilevel professional medical complex consists of approximately
75,000 square feet of bat roosting areas, some over 70 feet high.
II Description of problem
This building was home to over 10,000 free-tail bats and one
12 foot alligator. The bats were roosting in most of the facility's
mansard roof tiles and the alligator resides in the base of one
of the stair towers. When working on this side of the building
we stationed an extra employee to keep an eye on "Big Al"
just to make sure we always knew where he was. The facility owner
had tried many times to remove the bats. One attempt by their
staff, one by an exterminator, one by an animal trapper and one
by a supposed bat excluding firm.
One of the most challenging parts of this task was removing all
the materials installed during the previous attempts and, unfortunately,
having to remove over 750 dead bat carcasses and left as a result
of work done by the previous "expert".
After a 1-day and 2-night evaluation of the facility and colony
our exclusion program began. With the use of boom lifts and our
extremely sure-footed staff, we installed exclusion nets over
the roof mansards of the entire facility. Over 70,000 square feet
of net flaps were installed. Our staff completed this phase in
only 2 days. Within 10 days all the bats were safely excluded
and the cleanup and sanitation process began, followed by the
removal of the exclusion devices. After that, every inch of the
entire 70,000+ square foot mansard was inspected and any and all
holes greater than 1/4 inch were sealed with our exclusive tube
& seal process.
IV Unique attributes of project
Great heights, strong September winds, wet soggy grounds, "Big
Al" and the 10,000 free-tail bats were no match for Friends
Of Bats.
Finally - bat free!
The project took 2 weeks to complete.
