I Description of property

Over 30 structures make up this beautiful, peaceful campus. Some of the structures date back to the 1800's. In fact, it is said that during construction, some of the workers could hear cannon fire from the nearby battlefields during the Civil War.

II Description of problem

Hundreds of big brown bats chose several of the structures for home. Sightings by students and staff and the odor associated with large colonies of bats over long periods could no longer be tolerated. Once again, after several failed exclusion attempts, Friends of Bats were called to the rescue.

III Method used

Each building that did NOT have any bats was bat-proofed prior to the colony exclusions.
Once these buildings were bat proofed the process of excluding the current colonies began.
Several different processes were utilized. Net flaps, exclusion valves, one-way flaps, and even some hand removal. Access was provided using ladders, boom-lifts, and for one structure, body harness climbing ropes.
Once the bats were gone, the cleanup and sanitation began.

IV Unique attributes of project

The best part was coming from Florida, we actually got to witness fall in all of its splendor! The difficult part was being away from our beautiful Florida weather and our families. We were pretty cold, but we will travel and be a little uncomfortable to help save bats!

V Project duration

The actual job took 8 days with a 6-man crew. There was a 3-day follow-up visit. The campus is finally bat free!

This was such an interesting job, we had to add some more pictures...
