I Description of property
This complex, located on the Peace River, was
home to an extremely large colony of free-tailed bats living under
the barrel type roof tiles.
II Description of problem
Initial inspection showed signs that at least
three previous attempts were made to evict the bats. Prior to
starting our work, materials used on previous attempts had to
be removed. These attempts were made with foam, roof cement, wire
mesh, nets and even some kind of fabric. The problem was not with
the choice of materials but rather the lack of knowledge doing
exclusions.
FOB determined that because of the spacing in
the tile joints it would best to permanently, entirely net the
mansards. The design, curves and nooks of the mansards was of
some concern installing the nets, because at FOB our goal is always
to do the highest quality of work, as unnoticeable as possible.
Once the work began we installed exclusion flaps with the use
of two 60 foot boom lifts.
IV Unique attributes of project
The problem was that the work began during Florida's
hurricane season, and some high winds made it very difficult and
scary.
Within 1/4 mile of the complex a large colony
of bats resided in a bridge. Because of the bridge it was determined
that bat houses were not necessary. It now appears that the colony
of bridge bats has doubled!
High winds and torrential rain storms caused some
delays, but after 2 weeks the work was completed.
